Painting Kitchen Cabinets

If your old wood kitchen cabinets are making your kitchen look dated and worn, don’t despair. You can have a whole new look without having to pay for a whole new kitchen.

One of the easiest and most economical ways to update your kitchen cabinets is to paint them. Painting cabinets white has been a dominate trend for the last five or ten years. White is a natural choice because it is bright and clean looking and goes well with all appliances.

As a neutral, white can be combined with any number of warm or cool accent colors. Or, white cabinets can be combined with black countertops for a modern, monochrome look.

Setting the Stage

For this project we chose to use Whitetail by Sherwin Williams. When painting your cabinets I do not suggest using pure white because it will look dirty gray.

Prep Work

Whenever you start a cabinet project, prep work is key. Take the time to tape all of the edges with blue painter’s tape because if you don’t you will have bleed through.

We didn’t need to sand the cabinets for this project. We just removed the hardware, cleaned the surfaces and started with a layer of primer – Sherwin-Williams’ Multi-Purpose Latex Primer. I used the short-handle Wooster brush to paint this project.  (I don’t recommend using a paint roller!)

The Project

Remember that it will take more than one coat of paint to get the look you want. After the first coat of paint, the cabinets looked opaque and streaky. But don’t panic.

After we added the second coat of paint the cabinets still didn’t have the look that the client wanted. She wanted the cabinets to look distressed but she didn’t think that she wanted them to be antiqued or glazed. But after a little convincing she agreed that sanding and glazing would give the dimension and pop that she desired.

Finally, we added the hardware pulls back to the drawers and doors. Adding hardware is like finding the perfect earrings to match your outfit. We already had the shape and design we wanted but we spray painted the pulls with a fresh coat of black satin.
